A police complaint was today filed against the staff and crew members of Jet Airways' Mumbai-Jaipur flight whose cockpit crew "forgot" to turn on a switch that controls cabin air pressure early on Thursday, resulting in at least 30 passengers suffering nose and ear bleeding.

The complaint has alleged dereliction of duties amounting to attempt to murder of travellers on board.

In a mid-air scare, Jet Airways flight No. 9W 0697 lost cabin pressure after the crew "forgot" to turn on a control switch leaving 30 of 166 passengers bleeding from ears and nose and forcing the aircraft to return to Mumbai.

Officials in Mumbai said five passengers, who suffered nose and ear bleeding, were diagnosed with "mild conductive deafness" and later discharged from hospital.

One of the five passengers on Thursday demanded Rs 30 lakh in compensation, besides 100 upgrade vouchers, alleging lack of proper care by the airline. The passenger has also allegedly threatened to "share" the video of the flight, whose cockpit crew "forgot" to turn on a switch that controls cabin air pressure early Thursday, resulting in at least 30 passengers suffering nose and ear bleeding, with the media, if his demands are not met, sources in the airline said.

Under the law, airlines are liable to pay compensation in case a passenger gets injured while travelling with them.

The cockpit crew of the Boeing 737, which had 171 people on board including five crew members, was derostered and the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) was ordered by the government to probe the incident.

Serious incidents and accidents are referred to the AAIB for a detailed investigation.

An AAIB official told PTI the incident could be a case of negligence on the part of the pilots since controlling cabin pressure is part of mandatory checks before operating a flight.

One of the 2 pilots of flight 9W 697, which returned to Mumbai after being airborne for around 23 minutes, is a captain with more than five years experience.

The Boeing 737 aircraft returned to Mumbai due to "loss of cabin pressure" and the pilots have been taken off duty pending investigation, a Jet Airways spokesperson said.

"Out of 166 passengers on board, 30 passengers are affected... some have nose bleeding, few have ear bleeding and some are complaining of headache," he added.

A source at Mumbai airport claimed the aircraft made an emergency landing while the airline maintained it landed normally.
