The Jammu and Kashmir police foiled a major fidayeen (suicide) attack when they caught a Pakistani Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) terrorist in Baramulla on Saturday.

Twenty-three-year-old Abdul Rehman alias Shabir Ahmad Khan of village Pollas of district Poonch in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) was arrested in a joint operation by the J&K police and 46 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) of the Army.

"It is a big achievement. The terrorist was the commander of Baramulla. He was planning to establish a fidayeen base. He was operating in and around Baramulla," Imtiyaz Hussain, senior superintendent of police, Baramulla, told dna.

What has, however, rattled security agencies is the recovery of an Aadhaar card with the name Shabir Ahmad Khan and his picture superimposed on it. "It could be a fake as well. We are verifying it," said Hussain.

"He is part of a fidayeen squad that infiltrated in January this year from the Machil sector (of LoC in Kupwara district). The terrorist was trained at the JeM training camp in Balakote, Pakistan," said Hussain.

Police said the JeM is desperately trying to establish a base in Baramulla to launch sensational attacks on security forces and other targets.

A similar attempt was foiled in February when security forces busted a JeM module and arrested 17-year-old Pakistani terrorist Mohommad Sidiq Gujjar alias Shahid from Sialkot, along with three local miltants.

Gujjar was was part of four members Afzal Guru Squad of JeM, which carried out the fidayeen attack on the 3/1GR camp which was foiled by troops, leaving three militants dead on November 25, 2015. A civilian was also killed in the attack.

Gujjar, however, managed to escape from the spot and was later asked by his handlers from across the LoC to set up base in Baramulla and Kupwara and wait for further orders of launching fidayeen attack in or outside the valley.

Rehman is the fourth Pakistani fidayeen to have been captured alive in J&K since the Udhampur terror attack in August last year.

LeT militant Mohammed Naveed alias Usman of Faisalabad was captured alive when he, along with his associate Noman attacked, a BSF convoy near Narsoo Nallah at Udhampur on August 5, 2015.

Noman was gunned down while Usman took some civilians hostage in a bid to flee from the spot. He was overpowered by two hostages and handed over to security forces.

On August 27, 2015, Sajad Ahmad aka Javid Ahmad alias Abu Ubadullah, a 22-year-old Lashkar-e-Taiba operative from Muzaffargarh in Pakistan, was captured alive after all his four associates were gunned down at two different locations in Bijhama to Panzala forests of Baramulla district.
