The latest news on the establishment of AIIMS (All India Institute of Medical Sciences) in Tamil Nadu is that CM J Jayalithaa has written to Modi urging him to quickly announce the location.

It was expected that Prime Minister Modi would make the announcement when he visited Coimbatore in early February. The Confederation of Indian Industry and Indian Medical Association has stated that it was keen that an AIIMS was established in Perundurai as that would help the workers in the Western area get treatment. Moreover, there is no large Central medical institution in the Western districts as well. As Perundurai was close to both Kerala and Karnataka as well, it would help those states too.

In 2014, Jayalalithaa had first written to Modi asking for an AIIMS to be established in the state in the same year. She said there were five suitable sites – Chengalpet in Kancheepuram district, Pudukottai town, Sengipatti in Thanjavur district, Perundurai in Erode district and Thoppur in Madurai district. In her letter then she had stated that establishing AIIMS in the state would significantly improve medical education and provide high-end tertiary level healthcare in the public sector which will benefit the poor and middle classes.
