Jayalalithaa returned to the Tamil Nadu Assembly on Monday as Chief Minister once again and the entire Assembly was on its feet to welcome her. Amma (Mother) as she is affectionately called by the people of Tamil Nadu has announced many populist schemes over the last two years. These schemes have endeared her more to the masses. Here’s a look at some of the welfare schemes she has launched…

Amma Theatres

Now that Jayalalithaa is back as chief minister, the Amma Theatre scheme which was on hold all these months, is likely to see daylight. The Chennai Corporation had identified seven locations already for these theatres in the city, namely T Nagar, Basin Bridge, Kotturpuram, Ramapuram, Pulianthope, Kodambakkam and Wall Tax Road. All these theatres will be air-conditioned and the price of the ticket is likely to be less than Rs 25. Tickets will be sold at the counters only.

Amma Canteens

These low-cost eateries were launched across the state to give all the low-income workers a good meal at Rs 10. The idlis are priced just Rs 1 for one! These canteens are a great success because even professionals have taken to eating lunch at The Amma Canteens as the quality is good and cost is low.

Laptops for students

Over 11 lakh laptops are in the process of being distributed free to students across the state by the AIADMK government. This initiative costs the government about Rs 1100 crore. Over the last four years more than 21 lakh students have already been given free laptops.

Mixer, grinder and fan

Every home needs the basic mixer, grinder and fan felt the AIADMK government and in a bid to fulfil a homemaker’s needs, the government has started distributing these items free of cost to beneficiaries.

Small bus services

While the regular PTC buses are plying on major roads, Jayalalithaa has launched the ‘small bus’ service to connect the suburbs to bus stands and railway stations. She also had stated that 6000 new buses would be bought by the government.

Amma Cement

Jayalalithaa launched the Amma Cement Scheme to help people buy a bag of cement at a subsidised cost of Rs 190. There were some caveats – those eligible to buy under this scheme should be constructing a maximum area of 1500 sq ft and the maximum allotment was 750 bags per person. People could call the toll-free number 1800-425-22000 between 8 a.m. and 10 p.m., or log on to www.ammacement.com for more info.

Amma Pharmacies

The increasing prices of medicines had Jayalalithaa launch a scheme for this too. The Amma Pharmacies, as they are called, were launched in 2014 and medicines are being sold at a reasonable price.

Amma Water and Salt

Water and salt have also been packaged under the Amma brand and are being sold across the state at subsidised rates.
