Tamil Nadu: Jayalalithaa launches distribution of free books, uniforms to students

The state government has said that the initiative was a party of efforts to reduce number of children dropping out of schools

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Wednesday launched the distribution of free text and note books and uniforms to students in government and state-aided schools for the 2016-17 academic year.

As in previous years, she gave away text, note books and uniforms to students here at the Secretariat marking the launch of the welfare scheme across Tamil Nadu for the 2016-17 academic year.

An official release here said, 90 lakh students between I and XII standards would get text books, 77 lakh students note books (I to X Classes), 47 lakh students (I to VIII Classes) uniforms in Tamil Nadu.

Students studying in the state-run and government aided schools are the beneficiaries of the scheme.

The initiative was part of efforts to halt children dropping out of schools, the release added.

Students also get fee-free education, nutritious meal, cycles, laptops, school bags in State-run and aided schools.
