An army jawan was killed and two others injured in an overnight gunbattle with militants in Tangdhar sector near Line of Control (LoC) in Kashmir.
"One jawan made the supreme sacrifice while two others were injured in the operation against militants in Tangdhar sector of Kupwara district," an Army official said in Srinagar.
The slain soldier has been identified as Bashir Ahmad. He was the first one to notice militants on the Indian side of the LoC on Saturday. The intruders fired at him and he died because of his injuries.
Police said a group of five to six heavily armed militants were challenged on the Indian side of the LoC on Saturday after they had managed to sneak across from the Pakistani side. The encounter between the security forces and militants broke out yesterday near Ragni post in Taya forests. The operation was going on till last reports came in, the official added.
