On Independence Day, Pakistan army tried to push in a group of heavily armed intruders into Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) from the Line of Control (LoC) in Naushera sector of Rajouri district in Jammu. A soldier was injured in the gunfight with the infiltrators.

The infiltration bid comes a day after Indian troops launched a calibrated fire assault against the Pakistani army and killed two of their soldiers on the LoC in Langdhar sector. The fresh incident occurred at 5.15 am on Wednesday when Army troops noticed suspicious movement along the LoC in Naushera.

"On being challenged, the armed intruders opened fire on own troops. Our troops responded with equal measure. Pakistan Army posts provided supporting and covering fire to help in extrication of the armed intruders," said Lieutenant Colonel Devender Anand, defence spokesman at Jammu. An army personnel sustained injuries in the firing. Doctors said that his condition is stable.

Lt Col Anand said search operations are continuing in the area.

"Pakistan continues in its nefarious designs of supporting and abetting infiltration across the LOC. It is clear that Pakistan has never been interested to bring about peace and stability in J&K. They have been vitiating the atmosphere along the LoC and the hinterland," said Lt Col Anand.

This is the third Pakistan abetted infiltration bid that has been foiled on the LoC in the last eight days. An army soldier was killed after security forces foiled a major infiltration bid along the LoC in the Tangdhar sector of Kupwara district on Monday.

On August 7, four soldiers including a gallantry award winning Major were killed in a fierce gun battle with highly entrenched infiltrators along the LoC at Gurez. Two infiltrators were also killed in the operation.
