Jatra: Festival of taste of Maharashtra from tomorrow

150 stalls will offer more than 50 variety of dishes; Kalaranjan Group artistes will present Lavani dance.

The three-day annual trade and Marathi food festival -'Jatra' will get underway at Poddar Plaza on Gandhi Hall premises on Friday.

Presentation of traditional Marathi folk dance Lavani by the artistes from Kalaranjan Group from Mumbai will be the main attraction in the carnival

Indoreans will also have the taste of more than 50 varieties for Maharashtrian dishes at around 150 stalls.

The carnival organising secretary Sudhir Dandekar told dna that, "the presentation of Lavani by Mumbai's  Varsha Sangamnerkar & Co would the crowd puller.

As Diwali is round the corner, there would be stalls for items related to the festival at the fair," He added.

Varsha Sangamnerkar has been active in performing Lavani for last 25 years. Sandeep Kamale will be choreographer of the event. Dandekar said this time we have erected a huge stage for Lavani.  Lavani has a very old history and journey of transition. With the arrival of high-tech sound and light system, the Lavani has become more colourful and eye-catching.

Maharashtra cuisine covers a range from being mild to very spicy dishes. Wheat, jowar, bajri, vegetables, lentils and fruit form important components of Maharashtrian diet. Popular dishes include-Puran poli, batata vada, kande-pohey, bakarvadi ukadiche modak etc.

There would be a lot of other common Maharashtrian dishes is available at the stalls, these are-
Puran Poli: One of the most popular sweet items in the Maharashtrian cuisine. It made from jaggery, yellow gram chana dall, plain flour, cardamom powder and ghee. It is made at almost all festivals.

Zunka-bhakar:
A native Maharashtrian chick pea flour recipe eaten with bhakari.

Vada Pav: Popular Mumbaia dish consisting of fried mashed-potato dumpling (vada), eaten sandwiched in a bun (Pav). This can be referred as Indian version of burger and is almost always accompanied with the famous red chutney made from garlic and chillies and fried green chillies.
Misal pav (spicy curry with bread):  It consists of spicy curry usually made of sprout of Mataki and chilly powder gravy called 'Kutt'. The final dish is topped with Punjabi mix, Farsan or Sev , onions, lemon and coriander. It is usually served with bread toasted with butter and buttermilk or curd and papad.

Bakarwadi: This spicy fried snack is famous all over India.

Thalipeeth: A type of pancake. Usually spicy and is eaten with curd.

Ukadpendi (Wheat flour Upma):
  a quick and healthy breakfast from Maharashtra. It is purely made up of Wheat flour so no doubt it is very healthy and diet cautious and diabetic people can eat this without any hesitation.
