Jat leader threatens protest if Haryana govt does not agree to demands

Jat leader Yashpal Malik has threatened to hold a protest if the Haryana government did not agree to their demands.

''If Haryana government does not agree to our demands then we will hold a protest and many will come to Delhi on tractors and trolleys for the protest,'' the Jat leader said in Rohtak on Sunday. 

However, Union minister Chaudhary Birender Singh said that there is a chance that they will get a reservation and also get through the judicial scrutiny. "When Gujjars and Yadavs can get reservation then why can't we," the minister added.

In September, the Punjab and Haryana High Court had upheld the constitutional validity of the Haryana Backward Classes (Reservation in Services and Admission in Educational Institutions) Act 2016, that provides for 10% to six communities, including Jats.

A violent Jat agitation had crippled the state in February, which resulted in the death of many people and widespread damage to property. It was brought under control only after the army staged a flag march. 

In March 2016, the Haryana Assembly passed the Haryana Backward Classes (Reservation in Services and Admission in Educational Institutions) Act 2016, carving out a new BC (C) category which included the communities of Jat, Jat Sikh, Muslim-Jat, Bishnoi, Ror and Tyagi. The act made provisions for reservations to these six communities.
