It’s not the best time to be a foreign tourist if you’re visiting Uttar Pradesh. In October this year, a Swiss couple was thrashed in Fathepur Sikhri near Agra. A few weeks later, a German national was beaten up by a man at a railway Station in Sonbhadra district a few days ago because he unintentionally ignored a man's greeting. Four days ago, 11 French tourist were molested and assaulted in Mirzapur. And now the latest attack: a Japanese tourist was drugged and his valuables, including passport, were taken away from him in Varanasi.
According to ANI, a case has been registered with the Varanasi police. The tourist says he was allegedly drugged before his valuables were stolen. “The culprit decamped with my belongings, including cash, camera, mobile, passport, visa and other documents'.
A case has been registered against unknown persons.
The attack on the tourist will also be an embarassment to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who has been vocal about his friendship with Japan and its Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.
Abe called Modi as a visionary leader and said that Indo-Japan partnership is special, strategic and global.
"Dear friend PM Modi is a far sighted leader. He made a decision of making New India and chose Japan as a partner, we completely support it. Japan is committed for 'Make In India'," he added.
"If we merge Japan's Ja and India's I then it became 'Jai'. If we work together nothing is impossible," Abe said.
Attacks on foreign tourists
Earlier this week, the group of French tourists was assaulted by a group of local boys in Ahraura area of Mirzapur. The injured tourists were shifted to the Mirzapur hospital for further treatment.
The incident comes to light after a German national was beaten up by a man at a railway Station in Sonbhadra district a few days ago because he unintentionally ignored a man's greeting.
Also, a Swiss couple was thrashed at Fatehpur Sikri on October 26.
The incident had sparked outrage with Union Ministers Sushma Swaraj and KJ Alphons seeking a report from the state government.
While Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had slammed the attack, he also ordered an inquiry.
The Swiss couple, 24-year-old Quentin Jeremy Clerc and Marie Droze, were attacked near the railway station at Fatehpur Sikri by a a group of boys. The locals started chasing them and harassing them. They insisted they wanted to take selfies with Marie. When the couple refused, they rained stones and sticks on Jeremy. Marie too wasn't spared in the brutal attack.
