A class XI student received a bullet injury in his spinal cord after being 'accidentally' shot at by his classmate at a private school at Sakchi area in Jamshedpur on Wednesday, police said.

Amit Kumar was showing the two country-made pistols he had brought to the school to his friend sitting next to him ahead of the school assembly hour on Wednesday morning when one of the fire arms accidentally went off, Deputy Superintendent of Police (City), Animesh Naithany said.

Sudhanshu Gupta, who was sitting in the bench just in front of Amit's got shot and was rushed to Tata Main Hospital, he said. The bullet was lodged in Sudhansu's spinal cord, which was being operated upon, the DSP said.

Amit has been taken into custody and two country-made pistols were seized from his possession, Naithany said. Amit has been booked under Arms Act, he said.

Swarna Mishra, principal of the school, said no class was affected following the incident and school functioned normally.

Referring to the incident, she said the incident took place ahead of assembly hour and our teachers rushed to the scene as soon as they heard the gunshot. On reaching the spot, they found Sudhansu in an injured state and took him to TMH.

Following the incident, Amit was caught by the school guard while trying to flee and handed over to the police, she said.
