A professor at the University of Jammu has been barred from teaching pending an inquiry over his remark terming freedom fighter Bhagat Singh as a "terrorist".

Professor Mohammad Tajuddin, of the varsity's department of political science, has been taken off the teaching roster till a 6-member inquiry committee led by the dean submits its report to the vice-chancellor. The report is expected in seven days.

After a video of one of Tajuddin's lectures popped up on social media in which he purportedly made the contentious remark, the issue kicked up a controversy with protesting students writing to the vice-chancellor to seek action against him.

"I got a WhatsApp video in which Professor Tajuddin clearly mentioned that 'Bhagat Singh… he was also a terrorist'. This line has hurt my feelings as Bhagat Singh gave his life for our nation," wrote a varsity student to the VC.

Varsity spokesman Vinay Thusoo said, "Till the time the committee submits the report, Tajuddin cannot take classes. Inquiry is being led by dean." Tajuddin apologised for the remark. "I do not degrade Bhagat Singh's sacrifice. The remark was made in a certain context. Still, if anyone's sentiments are hurt, I am sorry," he said.
