Waking up to the environmental degradation, Jammu and Kashmir government has launched a massive drive to implement the ban on the sale and use of polythene bags in the last ditch effort to make the valley plastic free.

This follows the Jammu and Kashmir High Court order banning the use of polythene bags.

Pursuant to the order,  District Magistrate Srinagar, Dr Syed Abid Rasheed Shah issued strict instructions for ensuring the implementation of the court directives.

Instructions were issued to all the Tehsildars to seize polythene bags wherever found in use.

"Strict instructions were also issued to all the ward officers of the Srinagar Municipal Corporation to ensure implementation order", said an official spokesman.

More than 95 kilograms of polythene bags were seized from various parts of the district as part of the anti-plastic bag use drive started on Monday.

Joint Commissioner SMC and concerned Tehsildars have been instructed to submit the daily action taken reports along with details of the number of seizures made during the day.

"To ensure implementation of the order in letter and spirit, special squads for enforcement and seizures have been earmarked in all the Tehsils of the district with overall supervision by concerned Tehsildars",  said an official spokesman.

Jammu and Kashmir police too have joined in and launched a special drive against the use of Polythene to make  Srinagar a plastic-free city.

"During checking it was found that most of the traders have shifted to use of non-polythene bags.  Some polythene used by few shopkeepers were seized",  said a police spokesman
