Jammu and Kashmir: Two army men killed in Pak firing in Sunderbani sector

The incident occurred on Monday evening when Pakistan Army violated ceasefire and resorted to unprovoked firing

Two Indian army soldiers were killed  after Pakistan army resorted to indiscriminate firing and shelling on the  Indian forward positions along the Line of Control (LoC) in Sunderbani sector of Rajouri district in Jammu division.

The incident occurred on Monday evening when Pakistan Army violated ceasefire and resorted to unprovoked firing using small arms, automatics and  mortars. Lieutenant Colonel Devender Anand, defence spokesman at Jammu, said  firing started at 5.15 pm and  Indian Army retaliated strongly and effectively.

"However,  in the exchange of fire, Rifleman Vinod Singh and Rifleman Jaki Sharma were grievously injured and later succumbed", he said. Hailing from Village Danapur, Jaurian, District  Akhnoor in Jammu and Kashmir 24 year old Vinod Singh is survived by his father Ajit Singh.

 Rifleman Jaki Sharma, 30, belonged to Village Sanhail, Hiranagar, District Jammu is survived by his wife Rajni Devi. "Rifleman Vinod Singh and Rifleman Jaki Sharma were brave and sincere soldiers.The nation will always remain indebted to the brave hearts for their supreme sacrifice and devotion to duty", said Lieutenant Colonel Anand.

The fresh ceasefire violation comes four days after an army officer was injured when Pakistan Army violated ceasefire on Line of Control (LoC) in Nowshera sector of Rajouri district. This is the second time in last seven days when army has suffered fatalities on the Line of Control.  On April 3, a soldier was killed and  four others injured including an officer on the Line of Control in the Krishna Ghati sector of Poonch district of Jammu division.

Official figures revealed that 633 ceasefire violations were recorded along the LoC and the International Border in Jammu and Kashmir in first two months of 2018. Of these 432 incidents were reported from the Line of Control and 201 on the International Border. Ten security personnel and 12 civilians were killed in these violations.

Last year there were 860 ceasefire violations along the LoC and 111 incidents on the International Border. Twelve civilians were killed and 59 others were injured in these incidents in 2017. Six Army personnel and four BSF men were also killed and 18 army soldiers and 22 BSF jawans were injured in these incidents.
