Jammu and Kashmir governor NN Vohra said the Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) of the state has dropped by 10 points in just two years.
"The state has been ranked number one in the country for the reduction of IMR by eight points in a single year. We need to sustain and further build upon the achievements made so far,” Vohra said.
Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) has dropped from 34 to 26 per 1,000 live births in single year. The decline in IMR is the highest among all the states of the country.
“The overall health indicators in Jammu and Kashmir are better than the national averages. We have the distinction of having the highest life expectancy at birth in the country,” Vohra said.
Health experts attribute the decline in the IMR to strengthening the child care facilities and management and control of the diseases in different hospitals across the state. Doctors said infection and hypothermia were the two main causes for the deaths.
According to National Family Health Survey (NFHS), mother and child health indicators in the state have also improved in 2016-17. In fact, the indicators of Jammu and Kashmir are relatively better than the national average.
Officials attribute the success to the effective monitoring and dedicated efforts by the staff at various levels. “With the serious and constant efforts of functionaries at different levels, the Health and Medical Education Department has been able to ensure significant improvement in the healthcare system on ground during the past two years,” said an official.
Jammu and Kashmir governor said five new Medical Colleges have been sanctioned for the state. Three medical colleges will be established at Kathua, Doda and Rajouri districts in Jammu division, and two others will be set up in Baramulla and Anantnag districts of in Kashmir division.
“The staff for all the five Medical Colleges has been sanctioned and these Medical Colleges are expected to start delivery of health and medical services by the end of 2019. This will increase the intake capacity of MBBS seats from the existing 500 to 1000 seats,” Vohra added.
