Jammu and Kashmir Guv NN Vohra reviews security measures for Amarnath Yatra

NN Vohra stressed on the need for all agencies concerned to keep a close watch and maintain effective co-ordination to ensure the smooth conduct of the pilgrimage.

Jammu and Kashmir Governor NN Vohra on Monday held a meeting with senior security officials for the smooth conduct of the upcoming annual Amarnath Yatra. Vohra, also the Chairman of Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board (SASB), chaired a high level meeting at Raj Bhavan here to review the security measures with regard to the 48-day Yatra which is scheduled to commence on July 2 from the twin routes of Baltal in Ganderbal district and Chandanwari in Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir, an official spokesman said.

He said the Governor stressed on the need for all agencies concerned to keep a close watch and maintain effective co-ordination to ensure the smooth conduct of the pilgrimage. The meeting was attended by the Chief Secretary and senior officers of civil administration, police, Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs), Military and Central and state intelligence agencies, the spokesman said.

He said extensive discussions were held with regard to issues relating to obtaining a secure environment in the state, preparedness in handling any unforeseen situation arising on the route to the pilgrimage, functioning of the Joint Control Rooms at every Yatra Camp, linking up Joint Control Rooms with the MeT Department and the District Disaster Management Units and deployment of Mountain Rescue Teams (MRTs) of the state Police along with rescue teams of various security forces at identified locations on both the Yatra routes.

Deployment of fire fighting teams at pre-determined points, installation of X-Ray baggage scanning units at appropriate locations, Access Control Arrangements at Neelgrath, Panjtarni and Pahalgam helipads and elecommunication facilities along the Yatra routes also came up for a detailed review, he said.

The Governor directed police and the divisional administration to effectively enforce regulatory mechanisms and ensure that only those pilgrims who possess valid permits are allowed to undertake the Yatra on the date and by the route for which they had got registered. Vohra directed Chief Secretary B R Sharma to issue clear directions to ensure that the road from Jammu to Srinagar and Srinagar to Baltal are in proper condition for smooth pilgrimage.

Divisional Commissioner (Kashmir) was directed to undertake regular review of the arrangements being made for the Yatra. The Governor also ordered stationing medical teams at appropriate places and distances along both the routes of the pilgrimage.
