Militants on Tuesday disarmed the Personal Security Officer (PSO) of a BJP leader and decamped with his service rifle when they stormed into the guardroom of his residence at Gori Mohalla, Panzan in Chadoora of central Kashmir’s Budgam district.

Police sources said constable Bashir Ahmad was on regular guard duty at the residence of BJP leader Ghulam Mohommad Chopan when a group of militants entered the guardroom and enquired about the politician. Police said one of the ultras then took out a pistol and disarmed the cop at gunpoint. They later fled away with his AK-56 rifle along with two magazines.

Chopan, who was present at his residence at the time of incident, had unsuccessfully contested the 2014 Assembly elections from Chrar-e-Sharief constituency on a BJP ticket.

Top police and security force officials have rushed to the spot. A massive operation has been launched to nab the militants responsible for the incident. Police and security forces have sounded a high alert across the central Kashmir area to avert any terror attack.

The incident occurred on a day when security forces killed one of the top militant commanders in an encounter with security forces at Nagri in Kupwara district. Police sources said the operation was launched following specific intelligence about the presence of Sameer Ahmad, Hizbul divisional commander. An encounter ensued in which Sameer was killed.

This incident follows three days after militants carried out a fidayeen attack at Frestbal Pampore, killing eight CRPF men and injuring 22 others. Two fidayeens were later killed and two are still on the loose as security forces suspect that they might have fled towards Srinagar.
