The Jammu and Kashmir police foiled a major terror plot by the Al Qaeda-linked Ansar Ghazwat ul Hind wherein it planned to carry out serial blasts in New Delhi on Independence Day.

Police has arrested Irfan Hussain Wani from Gandhi Nagar, Jammu, believed to be heading to Delhi to hand over a cache of grenades to his contact as eight live grenades and Rs 55,000 cash were found on his person.

Hailing from Dangerpora village in South Kashmir's Awantipora, Wani is a college dropout and had joined the Zakir Musa-led Ansar Ghazwat ul Hind.

"We apprehended him Sunday evening. One of the patrol teams spotted him moving under suspicious circumstances and detained him. Upon frisking him, the cash and grenades were recovered," said Dr Shiv Dharshan Singh Jamwal, Inspector General of Police, Jammu division.

Before his arrest, Wani was reportedly in touch with Musa's second-in-command Rehan. Now, the police is also attempting to identify his accomplices, including those he was going to deliver the consignment to. To that end, a team of Delhi police is also arriving in Jammu to interrogate Wani.
