Two sets of terrorists attacked the Amarnath pilgrims, suggests the Jammu and Kashmir police's Criminal Investigation Department (CID) report contradicting the version of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) on the sequence of events.

The CID report that was sent to the Union Home Ministry refers to the terrorists as "unidentified gunman" and describes that there was a gap of 75 metres between the two strikes that the terrorists launched killing seven people and leaving 21 others injured, in Batangoo village near Anantnag, on Monday.

According to CRPF the firing took place on a combined picket of CRPF and state police, but the CID report gives another story. CID report states that the attack on the bus was carried out by two groups of terrorists.

"The first round of bullets was fired at the bus from the right side attempting to kill the driver. The second strike happened 75 metres away indicating there was an ambush by two sets of terrorists," said Home Ministry sources.

The first assault took place at Habbar Khatoon patrol pump in Batingu in Anantnag at 20:17 hrs when the bus was on its way from Srinagar to Jammu after the pilgrimage, an official said quoting the details of the report. The second strike took place minutes later as the driver of the bus zipped past and did not stop. Soon after the second fire assault a police patrol van escorted the bus to police lines in Anantnag, the report said.

On the other hand the CRPF version states that after firing at the picket, terrorists attacked the bus and while escaping fired upon a camp at Arwani.

Officials in the security establishment said the report sent by the CID is a preliminary one sent hours after the attack. Senior officials from the Home Ministry and Minister of State for Home Affairs Hansraj Ahir visited Kashmir on Tuesday. "A detailed analysis will be done once all the facts are verified," said an official from Home Ministry.

Sources said the exact number of terrorists in the attack is still not known. "It appears it was a group of at least 4-5 split in to two," said an official from Home Ministry.
