The BJP's Jammu and Kashmir leaders favoured the chief minister's post to be on rotational basis, even as they endorsed negotiations for an alliance with the People's Democratic Party (PDP).

Reluctant to concede to PDP's Mufti Mohammad Sayeed getting a full six-year term as chief minister, the BJP core group suggested to the party leadership that the post could be rotational even if it meant the party's turn comes towards the second half of the tenure, sources said.

The group met party leaders, including BJP president Amit Shah, here on Monday amidst reports that the central leadership had agreed to a PDP chief minister for the entire term. The PDP emerged the largest party with 28 seats followed by the BJP, which won 25 seats. However, the BJP claimed the support of six more MLAs.

"Regarding alliance with the PDP, there was no opposition from the members who attended the meeting, but they were also not in favor of the party giving up its claim on chief minister's post," a BJP leader said.

A member who attended the meeting said there was a "unanimous sense" that the party must not compromise on the CM's post while negotiating with PDP on government formation.

He said although other issues were also discussed in the meeting, the issue of chief minister remained a focal point. Sources said it was also observed in the meeting that the party was in no hurry to form the government.
However, PDP chief spokesman Naeem Akhtar said no breakthrough has been witnessed so far as no formal talks over the formation of the new government in Jammu and Kashmir have taken place.

"Once any breakthrough takes place, same will be informed to people accordingly. So far, I can say no development in this regard has been witnessed from the both sides," Akhtar said.

He maintained the party is still seeking feedback from ground via its elected legislators. On December 29, last year, Mufti had asked all his party legislatures to seek public feedback from their constituencies on forging alliance with the BJP.

BJP's Ram Madhav, while talking to reporters on Monday had said there has been an initiative from PDP's side and there was some forward movement on the issue.

Sources in Srinagar said PDP legislators have been getting threats from Pakistan against forging an alliance with the BJP. According to them, a few legislators of PDP have received threats from Pakistan warning them against entering into any tie up with BJP for government formation in the State.

The sources said some PDP legislators have even reported the issue to police and officials were discussing the sensitive matter. However, SSP Srinagar, Amit Kumar said none of the PDP legislators had reported the issue of threats to any of the police stations in his jurisdiction. Akhtar also said he had no information about threats to PDP legislators.

Sources said before threatening PDP leaders, their rival NC was also threatened against forging any alliance with BJP, but NC general secretary Ali Muhammad Sagar said he was not in the know of any threats that his legislators might have got.
