Gender-sensitive policing is the new mantra of the Mehbooba Mufti government to combat the rising crimes against women in the restive Jammu and Kashmir.

Jammu and Kashmir Cabinet has accorded sanction for the creation of four new Women Police Stations with the strength of 208 cops in the state. Two each police stations will be established in Kashmir valley and Jammu division.

Militancy prone district of Pulwama and border district of Kupwara will house the new women police stations in the valley while Kathua and Doda districts of Jammu have been selected in the Jammu division. Cabinet has also accorded sanction, to the creation of 208 posts, which includes four Inspectors, four Sub Inspectors, eight Assistant Sub Inspectors, 24 Head Constables, 136 Constables and 32 posts of Followers. Each police station will have the strength of 52 personnel.

“The Home Department will separately notify the jurisdiction of these four Women Police Stations in consultation with the Police Headquarters”, said an official spokesman.

Presently, there are six Women Police Stations-- one each in districts of Jammu, Rajouri, Udhampur, Srinagar, Anantnag and Baramulla --functioning in the state.

Jammu and Kashmir has one of the lowest numbers of women cops in the police force. Figures reveal only 3.12 percent of force comprising 2252 women personnel are working in the Jammu and Kashmir police department.

Police figures reveal that 2,920 cases of crime against women were reported in 2016.  These include 805 cases of kidnapping, 275 cases of rape, 157 cases of eve-teasing and 1,233 cases of molestation in 2016.

Official figures reveal that the Jammu and Kashmir State Commission of Women (SCW)  has received 3000 complaints of domestic violence and the harassment at the work place in the last three to four years in the restive state.

Waking up to the rising incidence of violence against women, SCW has started one-stop-crisis-center to help the women in distress at their doorsteps.

SCW has opened an exclusive phone line where women in distress can call or text or even WhatsApp to lodge a complaint. Officials of the SCW can immediately reach out to the women and help her to redress their grievances
