Various groups, including Jallikattu organisers, on Sunday held demonstrations with bulls and undertook fasts in Avaniapuram and Alanganallur in the district, famous for the bull taming sport, demanding lifting of the ban on it.

Organisers, competitors, members of political parties and other outfits along with the local people staged the agitation in support of the sport, which is traditionally held coinciding with the Pongal festivities.

Police said 300 members of various outfits, including People's Welfare Front, participated in the demonstration along with bulls for more than one hour this afternoon at Alanganallur, which used to attract a large number of foreign tourists for the sport.

The members of 'Satta Panchayat', competitors and organisers took part in the protest at Avaniapuram along with bulls.

With the Pongal festival, to be held in the middle of this month, just days away, the pro-Jallikattu groups have stepped up their demand for lifting the ban imposed by Supreme Court last year, saying it was a traditional feature of the festivities.
