Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi on Sunday launched a scathing attack on the Narendra Modi government and blamed it for the ongoing unrest in Kashmir.

After meeting ailing DMK President M Karunanidhi at his Gopalapuram residence, Rahul charged the Centre with mishandling the Kashmir issue even as it gave hollow reassurances about peace in the Valley.

"Around six-seven months ago, Mr Arun Jaitley came to see me and I told him that they are mishandling Kashmir and are going to set Kashmir on fire. Jaitley brushed me aside and said that Kashmir is peaceful," Rahul said, accusing the Modi-led government of treating the Valley as a "political asset". "They're creating a problem for this country by their incompetence and by trying to utilise Kashmir as a political asset. Kashmir is India's strength and they are making it India's weakness," he said.

Rahul, who was on a two-day visit to Tamil Nadu, addressed a public meeting organised by DMK to commemorate Karunanidhi's 94th birthday celebration.

The Congress scion continued his attack on BJP and its fountain head Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) while reiterating that the Opposition stands united and would fight together against their 'one idea' policy. "The cultural imperialism of the BJP is not acceptable to the people of India. The central idea we are fighting is the idea of RSS. We are not going to allow one single idea of RSS to invade this country. We are going to fight the RSS together. The Opposition stands united and it will fight together and defeat the BJP and RSS," he said.

When asked whether the BJP government at the Centre is controlling the Tamil Nadu government, he said, "Yes, it is. Not only that; they (BJP) are arm-twisting (the TN government). The BJP is convinced that they run Tamil Nadu."

Earlier, Rahul told his party members that there was "political confusion" in Tamil Nadu and that Congress must make use of this opportunity. He asked the leaders to visit the villages to connect with the people and also expressed his wish to participate during such visits.
