Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday asked the French EDF company to ensure employment for locals and for adequate safety measures to be deployed while starting work on the Jaitapur nuclear plant, expected to begin in December 2018 and conclude by 2027.

The 10,000 MW Jaitapur nuclear plant project has 6 reactors and EDF has assured that state-of-the-art technology with adequate safety measures will be used.

A delegation of French officials, led by secretary general for foreign affairs Christian Masse and Ambassador Alexandre Ziegler, EDF company officials and representatives from the office of the French consul general in Mumbai met Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday morning.

Fadnavis also asked the French officials to keep the power rates commensurate with Government of India guidelines, which they have agreed to.

Making it clear that Maharashtra was already a power surplus state, Fadnavis told the delegation that it was now exploring the potential of solar, nuclear and other renewable sources of power.

However, Shiv Sena legislator Rajan Salvi has said that he will oppose the project,  regardless of the BJP’s efforts to push it through. "Come what may, we will strive for the project to be scrapped. We will not allow any works to be conducted there," he said.

Salvi represents Rajapur constituency , of which Jaitapur is a part, in the state Assembly.

"We will oppose the project even if we are in power in Maharashtra and the Centre," he said, adding that party chief Uddhav Thackeray had also spoken about standing firm with local communities. Salvi represents of Rajapur.
