Jaish-e-Mohammad men stormed a house at Seer Jagir village in Tral and fired indiscriminately at the women, killing one of them on spot and injuring another on Sunday afternoon.

"Terrorists barged inside a house and fired at the women present there. Eighteen-year-old Yasmeena was killed and Rubeena was injured. The injured was shifted to the Sub District Hospital in Tral from where she was sent to Shri Maharaja Hari Singh hospital Srinagar for further treatment," said a police spokesman.

Sources said Yasmeena had come all the way from Khanmoh to meet her relative Rubeena in Tral when the terrorists barged into the latter's house. The terrorists were looking for Rubeena's husband, who was not present at home at the time of the attack. An altercation broke out and the terrorists opened fire, killing Yasmeena on the spot and leaving Rubeena grievously injured.

"A lot of Jaish ranks are present in the area where the attack took place. JeM local commander Noor Mohommad Tantray seems to be the mastermind of the attack," said Zahid Malik, senior superintendent of police, Awantipora.

Tantray, a 47-year-old midget, who has jumped parole and taken over the command of JeM in the area is wanted in several terror attacks and provides logistical support to fidayeens who stormed the District Police Lines in Pulwama on August 26.

Police said they are investigating the motive behind the attack on the women in Tral. Security forces have rushed reinforcements to the area and a massive search operation has been launched to nab the terrorists involved in the attack.

"The area has been cordoned and search is on. This village is located in a hilly area and is close to the jungles. We are trying to dominate the area," said Malik.

The attack on the women comes against the backdrop of a teacher's throat being slit and a formerPDP Sarpanch being killed, four days ago.
