Vasundhara Raje returns from sabbatical to script a historic win in Rajasthan. Within a span of ten years, since she was introduced to the people as their messiah, she has won two polls with record seats in the
Legislative Assembly, a feat unparalleled by any of her peers or leaders in the party.
It was not a usual evening at the Jaipur Airport where all eyes were on the chief minister designate Vasundhara Raje. The restlessness around the airport rubbed on the swarm of passengers going inside the airport and coming out of the departures. “Madam is coming back” whispered a CISF jawan to an enquiring female traveller who wanted to know about the crowd that was building up at the airport.
In that frenzied frame, cine stars and other state heads – UP chief minister Akhilesh Yadav – went almost unnoticed as people had only eyes for Raje.
Raje arrived. She saw. She had already conquered them.
Vasundhara Raje’s journey to Rajasthan began exactly ten years ago. It was 2013. The suave Pramod Mahajan masterminded her launching in the state and like all things big, her arrival was kicked off with a Parivartan Yatra, that would not only go on to change the way of electioneering in state, but would also transform its politics.
Vasundhara was a deviation for the politicians in state both in the way she functioned and presented herself before an adulating crowd.
Her actions, event though dramatic were endorsed by the janta and the amused babus. Only Raje could get the Congress legislators to watch a movie at cinema hall with her troupe of MLAs after a bitter debate inside the Vidhan Sabha.
And, yet in spite of her famous attributes, Raje lost the 2008 polls.
Between her and then BJP state president Om Prakash Mathur there was no love lost. Ashok Gehlot did not do any better. But he was able to put a government in place by some shrewd manoeuvring he has been known for.
In the five years that have gone by, Raje has had some terse moments with the party brass many of whom now vouch for absolute loyalty to her. She had to fight with her own to even land herself the post of state president. And then began her Suraaj Yatra.
On Sunday, hours after winning a historic majority in the state assembly elections, state BJP president and CM designate Vasundhara Raje was set to return the favour to the RSS and Narendra Modi whose combined might helped her to a historic win. Raje exhorted the workers while addressing them to help make Narendra Modi, the prime minister of the country.
“For the past nine months you all have worked day and night to make this win possible. The Lok Sabha elections are scheduled in April and we all have to work in tandem and make Narendra Modi the PM,” she said while addressing a huge gathering at state BJP office.
Raje further said, “You all have registered a historic win, which I understand no one in this state has ever witnessed. I dedicate the win to the people of the state and workers of BJP. It is not my win, it’s yours. It is your win, especially of the females of the state along with the youth.”
