In its first list of candidates for Assembly elections, the Congress party has announced names on three seats in Jaipur district. The party has played safe and handed the tickets to its sitting legislators.
There are 19 Assembly seats in Jaipur district. Notably, Jaipur district has been a stronghold of BJP and it is believed that the Congress would take time in handing out tickets for the remaining 16 seats.
Legislator from Civil Lines seat Pratap Singh Khachariyawas has retained his seat as his name was confirmed in the first list of candidates.
Khachariyawas won in 2008 Assembly elections by defeating BJP’s Ashok Lahoti by a huge margin. He has been active in politics and was earlier a member of BJP. However, he left the saffron party and contested 2008 Assembly elections on a Congress ticket.
Meanwhile, the Congress has also declared education minister Brij Kishore Sharma as its candidate from his Hawa Mahal constituency.
Sharma had to face a stiff competition from competitors who had even staged a demonstration against the minister recently.
Sources revealed that the man had even alleged that Jaipur MP Mahesh Joshi wanted to defame him and scripted the drama wherein Sharma was manhandled in his own constituency.
Moreover, the ticket for Chomu Assembly seat, which the party believes is another of its safe seats, has been handed to Bhagwan Sahay Saini, who is a sitting legislator. A second time legislator, Sahay was a member of the 11th state Assembly also.
The announcement of tickets to the two sitting legislators from Jaipur city was on expected lines, though many within Congress beleive that Khachariyawas is more deserving of the two, particularly after workers openly protested against Sharma.
