Jaipur: Lack of space, infra shows int'l airport in poor light

Our airport may have got the tag of an ‘international airport’, but there are many facilities that it is lacking in. For example, at Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport, approximate 30 flights can take off in an hour, whereas Jaipur International Airport can facilitate taking off of only 20 flights in an hour.

Besides, while IGI Airport has the parking space to accommodate over 100 aircraft, Jaipur International Airport can’t accommodate more than 21 planes at a time. Even Ahmedabad Airport has a parking space for over 40 aircraft.

If IGI Airport diverts more than two dozen flights to Jaipur Airport due to foggy conditions, the latter can’t handle this rush.  Being an international airport, it requires a huge parking area and an isolated bay to park a large number of planes. It is closest to the IGI International Airport and mostly when weather is inclement in New Delhi, flights are diverted to Jaipur.

When too many flights get diverted to Jaipur, the airport authorities here have to disallow their landing due to lack of space and other facilities. Over 800 flights operate (take off or land) at IGI Airport every day, whereas at Jaipur International Airport can handle the operation of only 64 flights in a day. Jaipur Airport doesn’t have an isolation bay to handle the cases of emergency landings (like in case of flight hijacking or explosives on a plane). In such cases, an isolation bay is necessary in the middle of the runway. Isolation bay should be at a proper distance from the terminal building and parking area of aircraft so that other planes couldn’t get harmed. “In past three months, a maximum of 8 flights were diverted in a day here & we didn’t feel we have inadequate parking space,” said Suresh N Borkar, director, Jaipur Airport.
