A day after the nation was outraged about the police brutality in Jadavpur University, the situation continues to remain tense on the campus. Vice chancellor Abhijit Chatterjee has decided to go on a five-day "rest", while all the Left students' unions called for a strike on Thursday throughout Kolkata. Most teachers also supported the students' move to call a strike, according to Bengali news channel 24 Ghanta. Teachers also have demanded the resignation of the Vice Chancellor as he was the one who called for the police.

In an unprecedented incident on Wednesday at 2.00 am, police and outsiders entered the campus of the Jadavpur University (JU) in Kolkata to forcefully evacuate protesting students who had gheraoed the Vice Chancellor and other top officials. The students were angry about the inaction of authorities in an alleged incident of molestation which happened on the JU campus on August 28.

Police Commissioner Surajit Roy Purakayastha in a press conference on Thursday said that the police had abided by the law and had treated the whole situation with empathy and patience. He said there had been no lathi charge and the police force had showed much patience in the situation.

Throughout Wednesday, the administrative office of the university was locked.

According to reports, the protesting students have demanded the setting up of a fresh investigating committee as they do not trust the internal probe being conducted by the University. The students claim that at around 2.00 am early on Wednesday morning, Abhijit Chatterjee, the Vice Chancellor of Jadavpur University, called the police to disperse the protesting students. Additional Commissioner of Police Debasish Roy, along with a strong contingent of policemen, rushed to the campus to control the situation, but the impasse continued as the students could not be convinced to withdraw their agitation. The police along with other goons allegedly also beat up the students leading to critically injuring two students.

Thirty-seven students were arrested including a woman, who were later released on bail.
