With the Jadavpur University students are adamant on carrying on their agitation, Vice-Chancellor Abhijit Chakrabarty on Tuesday said that what had happened in the campus was "unfortunate" and hoped good sense would prevail. "It is unfortunate what has happened. Let good sense prevail among the students. Let them come for discussion. I hope all problems will be solved," Chakrabarty told a TV channel here.

The VC is currently under pressure from the students and civil society to resign. But firmly backed by the state government, he is in no mood to put in his papers and has emphatically rejected any possibility of stepping down. The students, who have continued to boycott classes despite the government instituting a five-member committee to probe the alleged sexual harassment of a girl student, have demanded the resignation of the VC for calling the police inside the campus in the wee hours of September 17.

On Monday, the father of the girl, who was allegedly sexually harassed last month, dismissed any need for the VC to resign after the state education minister reached out to him. He said the students should call off their agitation as the state has formed a probe committee. He even marked his presence in the TMCP rally which aimed at countering the protest by the civil society and students of Jadavpur University.

The rally however was a tepid affair and media reports suggested that it lacked the spontaneity of the students' rally of September 20. Some people who were part of Monday's rally (that was supposedly against the 'anarchy' unleashed by a group of students in JU), were unaware of why they were taking part in it in the first place. But the government is planning to just brazen out the situation and the stand of the father of the molested student has certainly come as a shot in the arm for them.
