IUML retains Malappuram seat, BJP at distant third

The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) hegemony in Kerala?s Malappuram Lok Sabha constituency continued on Monday as IUML candidate PK Kunhalikutty won the by-polls with a mammoth margin.

The verdict was, however, not favourable for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as its candidate stood at a distant third position.

Kunhalikutty, who was the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) candidate, won the seat by 1,71,038 lakh votes.

Communist Party of India (Marxist) member MB Faisal was the first runner-up, while BJP?s N. Sreeprakash stood at the third position.

The seat fell vacant after the demise of IUML leader E. Ahmed. IUML?s Kunhalikutty maintained the party?s hegemony in Malappuram.
