Violence against children is everywhere. But people turn a blind eye. It’s hidden behind closed doors. It’s invisible, says the UNICEF website. With news channels flooded by news of child abuse and rape almost every day, this statement could not be truer for India.
India might be on a economic and infrastructure development spree but its social problems are far from over, in fact according to a report by Ministry of Women and Child Development, Government of India, 70 per cent of abuse victims do not report it. With 53.22 per cent children reported having faced one or more forms of sexual abuse, the inference of the study calls for severe reforms.
In an effort to create awareness, for its #ENDviolence against children campaign UNICEF India on Sept 24 published a video with Indian celebrities pledging to stand up against child abuse. With Farhan Aktar, Kareena Kapoor, Madhuri Dixit, Rahul Bose, Virendra Sehwag and Saina Nehwal , the video brings focus to a simple solution to a grave problem that continues to plague India, #ItStartsWithMe
Succinctly the website explains - But violence against children is entirely preventable when people come together and say that it is not acceptable. When they make the invisible visible.t violence against children is entirely preventable when people come together and say that it is not acceptable. When they make the invisible visible.
