Justice BN Srikrishna (retired), who authored the report on the 1993 Mumbai blasts, on Friday said that the investigations were carried out without any evidence.

Speaking to a section of the media, Justice Srikrishna, who headed the one-man commission, said, “The recommendations were not implemented in full and I have said this a lot of time. There were plenty of cases which should have been really investigated.”

“Most of the cases they had investigated either had no evidence or were true but undetected. Is this the way you investigate cases? And when questioned, it was stated that it was not possible to find out anything more,” he was quoted as saying.

His report stated that the blasts were a reaction to the riots that had plagued the city. “Tiger Memon, the key figure in the serial bomb blasts case, and his family, had suffered extensively during the riots and therefore can be said to have had deep-rooted motive for revenge.”

“There was a large amorphous body of angry, frustrated and desperate Muslims keen to seek revenge for the perceived injustice and atrocities perpetrated... and it is this sense of revenge which spawned the conspiracy of the serial blasts,” the report read.

However, when the commission’s report came out, the Shiv Sena-BJP government trashed it. They commented that the entire report simply focused on the riots after the blasts. In response, Justice Srikrishna said he had nothing more than the police investigation report to rely on in order to prepare his report.

Twenty four years after 12 coordinated blasts rocked Mumbai and took 257 lives and injured over 700 people, a special TADA court in Mumbai on Friday convicted six people and acquitted one in the second leg of the trial of the case.
