Despite a million hit by floods across country, MHA report downplays the situation

As three states — Bihar, Assam, and Andhra Pradesh — are facing moderate flood, the Centre on Monday has asked all the agencies to remain on alert. The Disaster Management Division of Ministry of Home Affairs prepared a detailed report on the flood situation across the country and submitted it to the Prime Minister's Office on Monday which stated that a total 10,63,979 people have been affected and 170 lost their lives .

"According to the Central Water Commission, There is no unprecedented and high flood sites in the country. However, seven moderate flood sites have been reported in Assam (5), Bihar (1) and Andhra Pradesh (1)," the report stated.

The ministry, however, prepared a detailed report of eight states — Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Assam, Uttarakhand, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan and Sikkim — has also shared it with the natural disaster agencies and paramilitary forces, who has been asked to remain on high alert.

Further, as per the report the India Meteorological Department has warned that fishermen to remain cautious while venturing into the sea along and off West Bengal, Odisha, and north Andhra Pradesh coasts.

The moderate flood has affected 56 districts and 1,688 villages. Also, crops in 52,442.13 hectare has been damaged and 325 houses has been completely wiped out, and 2,290 houses partially damaged.

In total 1,690 cattle lost their lives. In Gujarat 354 live stock, 42 in Uttar Pradesh , 23 in Chhattisgarh, 1,117 in Uttarakhand. In Assam, the state government is still accessing the loss of livestock but they have stated that 4,041,42 animals were affected due to flood so far.

The maximum damage happened in Assam where in 10,093,53 people have been affected and 60 human lives lost their lives. In Assam, 21 districts and 1512 village are affected damaging crops in 49454.48 hectares.

Further, it stated that 4,576 people were evacuated in three states — Assam, Gujarat and Bihar. The government opened 125 relief camps in these states.

"A total 151 NDRF teams.. consisting of 1,861 personnel with 168 boats are deployed," the report stated. The teams are deployed at Assam, Punjab, Arunachal Pradesh, jammu and Kashmir, Gujarat, Bihar, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Himachal Pradesh, Andra Pradesh, Odisha and Madhya Pradesh.

The report further pointed that animals in Kaziranga National Park have also been affected. Kaziranga National Park, situated in Assam, is a UNESCO world heritage site and known for one horned Rhinoceros.

"As per the report from Eastern Assam Wildlife Division approximately 38 per cent of Kaziranga is still inundation which has affected about 68 anti-poaching camps under Agartoli, Kohora, Bagori and Burapahar," the ministry stated.

CRPF pressed into service to save lives during flash flood in Odisha

On July 16, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) were pressed in service to save lives after flash flood were reported in Odisha's K.Singhpur and Seskhal areas. Troops stationed over there had rushed to the spot to rescue along with and relief team along with civil police. "The timely and swift action of CRPF's 4th Battalion could save more than 400 hundred personnel from flood affected area," said Harjinder Singh, DIG, CRPF.
