The Parliament failed to break the logjam and make any progress on the 9th consecutive day as opposition kept the treasury benches embroiled in the semantics of language and constitutional obligations, besides demanding presence of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s to presence during the discussion on demonetization.

Barring changes in the dialogue script of both opposition members and treasury benches in both the houses, there was no change and both Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha got adjourned without conducting legislative business.

While several Left and Opposition leaders took to streets to observe ‘Pratibad Divas’ and the ‘Jan Aakrosh Diwas’, the Opposition parties rallied inside the Houses too, causing adjournments for the day before 3pm.

Ghulam Nabi Azad decried PM Modi for misrepresenting their call for Jan Akrosh rally as Bharat Bandh and not tabling any of the RBI notification in the parliament.

“If anybody spoke about Bharat Bandh, it was the Prime Minister. Hence, it is the Prime Minister who is responsible for Bharat Bandh and not us. We have observed this day as Jan Akrosh Diwas (Public Outrage Day),” Azad said.

Congress leader Anand Sharma said, “Even the Constitution does not allow the Prime Minister or the government to deprive the citizens of their money and property, especially bank accounts. Not one Bill was tabled in the House. The Prime Minister and the government must answer.”

In Lok Sabha union home minister, Rajnath Singh tried to calm uproar. “We’re in a fight against corruption and black money in the country. If you have a complaint on implementation then we are ready to debate, but don’t doubt our integrity.... We are all here to speak for the government. But if the Opposition is so much adamant, Prime Minister will come to the House and will intervene,”he said.

Shiv Sena MP from Amravati Anandrao Adsul urged for discussion, saying “rural regions of Gujarat, Maharashtra and Karnataka have been under severe stress due to the cash crunch. The situation has improved, but still very inconvenient. We need to find a resolution at the earliest.”

But the opposition members were united in confronting the government and did not allow the house to function.

Using the opportunity on the first adjournment, the opposition members including DMK, CPM, Congress and RJD protested in front of the Gandhi statue in Parliament premises where Congress V-P Rahul Gandhi also joined them.
