IT raids: Here is all you need to know about Karnataka Energy minister DK Shivakumar

The Income Tax Department on Wednesday conducted searches at multiple properties related to Karnataka Energy minister DK Shivakumar, who was overseeing the stay of 44 Congress MLAs from Gujarat at a resort in Bengaluru, in connection with a tax evasion case.

Here's all you need to know

►​ DK Shivakumar was born to Mr. Kempegowda and Mrs. Gowramma of Dodda Alahalli village in Kanakapura taluk.

► As he was a student leader at the RC College in Bengaluru, he later joined youth Congress.

► Shivakumar became the General Secretary of Karnataka State Youth Congress in 1983-85.

► He was elected as a member of Rural Zilla Panchayat and remained its member till 1989.

► In 1989, Congress chose him as an electoral candidate from Sathanur which he won with thumping margin.

► He was elected as the Minister of State for Prisons in 1991- 1992.

► He became the cabinet minister in the SM Krishna government in 1999-2002.

► In 2004, DKS got elected again for the fourth time from Sathnur constituency.

► He is a veteran politician of Karnataka being elected in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly for the sixth time in 2013.

►  An MLA from the Kanakpura constituency​, DK Shivakumar currently holds the portfolio of 'Energy Minister' in the government led by Siddaramaiah.

► He was one of the richest candidates in the 2013 Karnataka polls.

About raids on DK Shivakumar​'s properties

► A total of 39 premises of the minister and his family are being raided by a team of about 120 Income Tax Department officials with the aid of central paramilitary forces.

► The raids are taking place in Delhi and Karnataka.

► The department is also investigating charges of alleged role of money power and huge transfer of illegal funds for polls.

► The search, described as an 'evidence gathering exercise', is being conducted by the Karnataka Investigation Wing of the Income tax department.

► According to IT department, the search is the continuation of an investigation which has been in progress for a considerable period of time

Cash recovered

► IT officials said Rs 7.5 crore cash was recovered from the search of the properties of the minister, who has been taken to his house in Bengaluru from the resort by the IT team.
