Under the Yogi Adityanath government, the UP State Haj house in Lucknow has been painted in saffron colour.

Significantly, the change in colour scheme of the State Haj House, which is used as a transit House by Haj pilgrims, came a day after the Yogi Adityanth government ordered to curtail madrasa holidays for Muslim festivals and made mandatory to keep madrasas closed on Diwali, Dussehra, Rakashabandhan, Christmas to celebrate festivals of Hindu and other faith.

The green and white exteriors of the State Haj house in Lucknow was given a  tinge of saffron colour overnight. Earlier, the Chief Minister Yogi Adityanth got the Secretariat Annexe building, also known as Lal Bahadur Shashtri Bhawan, housing his office on the fifth floor, painted in saffron hue.

Soon after that new buses rolled on state roads with saffron colour. A few ministers’ palatial bungalows were also given a saffron hue and government buildings in the state are awaiting their turn to get painted in the saffron colour.

Since Yogi taking over as CM, all government booklets have been released in saffron colour. Even public function stages, tapestry and towels are in saffron colour. Always clad in saffron dhoti-kurta, the sofas, curtains, towels at the Chief Ministrer’s official residence at 5 Kalidas Marg are a match to the 43-year-old Yogi Adityanath’s choice of colour.

When the opposition criticised the move, the Estate officer Yogesh Kumar Shukla clarified that the department always sends its colour schemes to the Chief Minister and the “CM preferred and approved saffron”.

Earlier, former Chief Minister Mayawati preferred blue and Akhilesh Yadav red. But it was for the first time that the Secretariat Annexe building and the State Haj house was saffronised, literally.

“The present government is a torch-bearer of Hindutva and that is why they are painting government buildings in ‘Bhagwa’ (saffron colour) instead of paying attention to the welfare of the state and its people,” alleged Leader of Opposition Ram Govind Chowdhary.

The opposition is particularly annoyed over State Haj house being painted in saffron colour. They feel that green is the universal colour of Islam and removing that with saffron is ‘anti-secular’ and an attempt to provoke religious sentiments.

But the State Haj Minister Mohsin Raza feels otherwise. “Saffron is a colour of energy. Why anyone should object when a buildings is given a bright and energetic look. Opposition have no issues against the present regime so they keep raking up insignificant ones,” chuckled Raza.
