For the upcoming Delhi University Students Union (DUSU) elections, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) has turned to national issue like corruption. The students’ outfit, which is affiliated to the BJP, on Tuesday, staged a protest against corruption and anti-student policies of the varsity.

Delhi University elections have always been based on issues concerning colleges and students. However, this year the student bodies are trying to use the growing anti-corruption sentiment in the country to attract students.

However, ABVP maintained that the protest was not directly related to the DUSU elections.

“Our protest was against the corrupt politics of Congress.

Our country is facing a massive corruption. No one is immune from it, even students are getting affected by corruption in the way funds are allocated and used. Today’s protest is also against the wrong policies of Delhi University due to which students suffer,” ABVP state secretary Rohit Chahal.

Similar protests were also held in several state universities, including those in Rajasthan and Meerut and the Benaras Hindu University. “The ABVP units across the country staged a protest against corruption. The present government has broken all records in corruption,” said national general secretary Umesh Dutt.

However, other student parties like the National Students Union of India (NSUI) and All-India Students Association (AISA) feel that university elections need to focus only on university issues. “As students, we are obviously concerned about what are the issues plaguing our nation, but as far as the university elections are concerned, it is better to focus on student-related issues. Only the elected members to DUSU can solve those issues,” said NSUI state secretary Amrish Ranjan.

The AISA, a left-wing outfit, also maintains that university issues like security of female students, college and hostel fees should be more important for DUSU elections. “I may talk about Telangana in the campaign, but I can’t do anything about it after winning DUSU elections. What I can do is to solve university related problems,” said AISA Delhi state secretary Sunny.
