After the final countdown, IIT-B's dreams have finally take off after a nine-year wait. The student satellite, Pratham, was launched by ISRO's four-stage Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) at the Sriharikota's Satish Dhawan Space Centre on Monday at 9 am.

Pratham will be part of other satellites. Over nine years, more than 100 students participated to make these satellites. At 9.12 am the Pratham satellites were lifted off. At 9.30 am there will be CATSAT ejection.

The project, first conceived in 2008, aims at making the institute a center for space science and technology research. The satellite is designed to fit within a cube of 30cm sides, and weighs nearly 10kg. The satellite was conceptualised by two aerospace students – Saptarshi Bandyopadhyay and Shashank Tamaskar – while IIT-B funded the project.

One of the IIT-B students said, "It is a special moment for us to see our satellite lifted off. Today At 11.26 am Pratham will be ejected in the space orbit. It will be placed at an altitude of 720 km. Besides IIT-B,  there is a small ground station at Malad's Atharva College. Through ground station we can locate the satellite later."

Pratham will be useful for scientific studies, help in tsunami warnings and correcting errors in GPS communication.
