BJP may not be a major political force in Tamil Nadu but political battle lines are being drawn with the saffron party in focus. The two warring factions of AIADMK are 'united' in its soft approach towards Narendra Modi government at the centre, while the principal Opposition party DMK, has upped its ante against the BJP to form a mega electoral alliance for the ensuing local body polls and the Lok Sabha election in 2019.

On Tuesday, CM Edappadi K Palaniswami instructed his colleagues to refrain from making critical comments against the BJP government at the centre. His instruction came amid the Opposition party's charge that the ruling party has surrendered itself to the centre and failed to take up the issues concerning the state.

The state has been witnessing a series of protest from Jallikattu to Neduvasal and to National Eligibility Entrance Test but the ruling party seems to have adopted a non-critical approach towards the Centre. This is in stark contrast to the approach of late Jayalalithaa who was highly critical of the centre for infringing on the state's rights.

Post-Jayalalithaa, the AIADMK government succumbed to the Centre's pressure to accept the Uday scheme, the food security act and the Goods and Services Tax that were opposed by the party supremo's regime. Though the party has been split into two factions, one common thing between them is their soft approach towards the BJP.

The DMK has upped its ante against the BJP to set the stage for a mega electoral alliance. After successfully conducting the April 25 bandh with the support of Congress, IUML, CPI (M), CPI, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, and Manitheneya Makkal Katchi, DMK working president MK Stalin had released two video messages criticising the Modi government on imposition of Hindi, failure to set up Cauvery Management Board, and misuse of central agencies to gain political foothold in the state. In the public meeting held on April 22, Stalin was non-committal on alliance but his allies Dravidar Kazhagam and Congress called for a formation of a secular alliance. Left parties which shared the dais with DMK for the first time since 2008 and VCK might join hands to prevent communal forces from gaining a foothold in the state, said a political observer.

Union minister of State and senior BJP leader from the state Pon Radhakrishnan said that his party will grow on its own political strength. "The time is ripe for the BJP to expand on its own," he said.
