In a tale of two bothers on very different paths, one of the three terrorists killed in an encounter with security forces in Kashmir has been identified as the brother of an IPS officer. Sources have said the slain terrorist had quit his Unani medicine course to take up arms.

Security forces engaged with terrorists in an operation in Shopian. Three terrorists were killed and one soldier has been reported injured. One of the three terrorists was identified as Shamsul Haq Mengnoo, son of Mohammad Rafiq Mengnoo of Draggud Village of Shopian District in South Kashmir.

Shamsul's elder brother is Dr Inamulhaq Mengnoo, a 2012 batch IPS officer with an MBBS degree who is presently serving in Assam. He has been posted as the Commandant of the 5th Assam Police Battalion, which is headquartered in Assam's Sontilla, since January 2017.

Sources said Shamsul had quit his Bachelors of Unani Medicine and Surgery (BUMS) course at the Institute of Asian Medical Studies (Unani) in Srinagar's Zakura, Kashmir's Global News Service reported.

Reports said a team from the Army and the Jammu and Kashmir Police launched a joint operation on Tuesday morning in Shirmal on the basis of credible inputs about the presence of terrorists in the area. The terrorists reportedly opened fire on the search teams as they closed in on their hideout inside an orchard.

Security forces busted the hideout during the gunfight, in which the three terrorists were killed. Officers have said operations are continuing even as they refused to confirm that a fourth terrorist had managed to flee the hideout. One soldiers from the Army was reported to have sustained injuries in the operation.

The bodies of the terrorists were recovered along with their weapons, ammunition and other supplies. Officials have said they are in the process of identifying the other terrorists.
