The Kolkata Police on Thursday denied permission to Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat to hold a rally in the city, scheduled for January 14. In a letter from Kolkata Police addressed to the Pracharak of the Kolkata, RSS, the police stated that the rally could not held at any of the proposed venues – Bhukailash temple grounds and Khidderpore.

The letter states that the Brigade Parade Grounds, one of the proposed venues of the rally is being used as a transit camps for the Gangasagar Mela pilgrims and vehicles, and will be used till January 18.  Another proposed venue – Bhukailash temple grounds can accommodate only 500 people, which could result in a stampede.

“You are therefore, asked not to organise the proposed meeting at either of the proposed venues on January 14 and to defer the same to a subsequent date under intimation to this office well in advance,” reads a part of the letter, signed by the Joint Commissioner of Kolkata Police (Headquarters), Supratim Sarkar.

A day earlier, a petition was filed at the Calcutta High Court, however it was dismissed after the state’s representative informed that the petition was not filed by RSS. Later, the court asked RSS to file a fresh petition and seek police permission. The court directed the police to let RSS know of their decision whether the rally could be held or not within 24 hours.

However, on Thursday on completion of 24 hours, the police informed RSS that the rally could not be held. On the other hand, the Kolkata unit of RSS has decided to move division bench on Friday at the Calcutta High Court.
