International Yoga Day: PM Modi leads global movement performing yoga with 30,000 people in Chandigarh

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday joined over 30,000 people in Chandigarh for the second International Yoga Day celebrations. For the first time, 150 divyangs were assisted in performing Yoga 'asanas' at the Capitol Complex in Chandigarh, the venue of the mega event.

Modi also interacted with the inmates of Paraplegic Rehabilitation Centre (PRC), Mohali, who were doing 'asanas' on wheel-chairs.

Dressed in a white-coloured t-shirt and track pants along with a scarf, Modi skipped the VVIP front row where Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, State's Health Minister Anil Vij, Haryana BJP President Subhash Barala, Ambala MP R L Kataria and Kalka MLA Latika Sharma were performing 'asanas', and occupied a mat in one of the back rows with other participants.

A yoga enthusiast himself, Modi performed 'asanas' for nearly 25 minutes on the red-coloured carpet.

Tihar, Rohini jails inmates gather in record number for IYD

A record gathering of over 11,000 prisoners and staff of Tihar prison complex and Rohini district jail performed various asanas on Tuesday on the occasion of Yoga Day. 

The event is being recommended for inclusion into the Limca Book of Records 2016.

Delhi Police chief, top brass, over 13,500 personnel mark IYD

Top brass of Delhi Police including commissioner Alok Kumar Verma and its over 13,500 personnel on Tuesday too participated in the IYD celebrations. 

Delhi Police organised yoga camps at 16 venues, each for every special unit and police district across the city.

At Connaught Place, where Urban Development Minister M Venkaiah Naidu was the chief guest and Lt. Governor Najeeb Jung and BJP MP Meenakshi Lekhi also participated, 9,000- 10,000 people turned up for the event, according to a senior NDMC official.

The AYUSH Ministry helped organise events at six other locations - Lodhi Garden, Nehru Park, Talkatora Garden, Swarn Jayanti Park in Rohini, Yamuna Sports Complex in Patparganj and District Park in Dwarka.

At least 100 Resident Welfare Associations selected by the ministry also hosted Yoga Day events. At Nehru Park, approximately 2,000 people turned up for the event.

Among those who were present were nearly 70 diplomats from 35 countries, including Japan, Sri Lanka and United States, according to an official of AYUSH Ministry.

Armed forces mark Yoga Day across land and sea

From performing 'aasanas' in sub-zero temperature at Siachen to desert in Rajasthan and warships, the armed forces today marked the International Yoga Day across the country.
Over four lakh personnel from the army alone participated in the events.

Apart from holding yoga camps in units across the country, the Indian Navy and Coast Guard also organised programmes on ships like INS Airavat, Virat, Jalashwa, INS Cheetah, a Kumbhir-class tank landing ship of the navy, and ICGS Sagar.
