Bihar's ruling Mahagathbandhan is witnessing a fresh bout of internal bickering with the alliance leaders spewing venom against each other for the last few days.

The latest in the string of verbal altercation comes in the backdrop of declaration of results of election to four seats of Bihar legislative council on Wednesday and Thursday. That the Janata Dal (United) had supported Bharatiya Janata Party candidate and sitting council chairman Awadhesh Narain Singh, who was declared a winner on Thursday, didn't go down well with the stronger alliance partner Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD).

"If the grand alliance had fought together, the results would have been better," Tejashwi Yadav, Deputy Chief Minister (CM) of Bihar and younger son of RJD boss Lalu Prasad told media persons on Thursday.

While the Gaya graduates' constituency was won by Awadhesh, Gaya teachers' constituency also went to Rashtriya Lok Samta Party's Sanjiv Shyam Singh. From both these seats, RJD as well as the Congress had fielded their candidates and senior leaders said the grand alliance vote got divided.

More verbal volleys were exchanged between the parties after some JD (U) leaders supported the sitting chairman's term extension following his victory. "We would like a new chairman to be from RJD," senior RJD MLC and ex-CM Rabri Devi said. Awadhesh's term ends on May 8.

While "cracks" in the grand alliance government have been making headlines since its formation in November 2015, the current imbroglio can be seen as an aftermath of neighbouring Uttar Pradesh Assembly poll results.

When RJD vice president Raghuvansh Prasad Singh said Bihar CM and JD (U) president "Nitish Kumar had helped the BJP win UP by staying away from the polls", JD (U) spokespersons Sanjay Singh and Neeraj Kumar sought action against him at the party level.

In return, Raghuvansh slammed the JD (U) spokespersons saying Nitish Kumar had asked them to abuse him. What added more fuel to the fire was Union minister Ram Kripal Yadav celebrating the festival with JD (U) leader Shyam Rajak. Both Tejashwi and Rabri had to intervene to silence Raghuvansh from attacking Nitish any further.

However, soon after one controversy is doused, another crops up and the senior grand alliance partner RJD seems to be in no mood to back off on the chairman issue this time.

The confusion within the Mahagathbandhan has given fresh salvo to Opposition BJP with senior party leader Mangal Pandey claiming that the government will not complete its full term.
