Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Monday praised the interim budget for 2014-15, saying Finance Minister P Chidambaram had "aptly summarised" the economic and social achievements of the past 10 years of which the UPA government was proud.

In a series of tweets following the tabling of the interim budget in the Lok Sabha, the prime minister congratulated Chidambaram for presenting a "well balanced vote on account portraying a realistic picture of the economic situation in the country".

"The finance minister has aptly summarised the economic and social achievements of the last 10 years which our government is proud of," one tweet said.

The measures announced on student loans and skill development were aimed at India realising its demographic dividend, he said.

"The issue of one rank one pension has been addressed comprehensively and I'm confident that our forces, officers and jawans will welcome this," Manmohan Singh said.

Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi later thanked Manmohan Singh for accepting the "one rank one pension" demand of the armed forces.
