Inmate killed by rivals in police van

The three inmates Vishal, Ravinder and Salman were presented in Saket court in a case matter whereas 28-year-old Manoj was there for a separate matter.

In a shocking incident, three inmates killed their rival in a moving police van as they were being transported from Saket court to Tihar Jail on Saturday. The incident took place in the afternoon when the van was passing Delhi's Hauz Khas area.

The three inmates Vishal, Ravinder and Salman were presented in Saket court in a case matter whereas 28-year-old Manoj was there for a separate matter. On their way back to jail, the three accused jumped on Manoj and killed him. While Vishal and Ravinder committed the murder to the settle an old score, where Manoj had shot at them in 2012, Salman's motive for committing the crime remains unknown.

The 3rd Battalion of the Delhi Armed Police was entrusted with ferrying the inmates from court to the jail which is at a distance of a little over 21 kms and would take over an hour to make in the Delhi traffic.

In a similar incident reported in August 2015, two inmates were allegedly beaten to death by seven others outside a prison van that was heading from Rohini, in outer Delhi to Tihar Jail. The case became sensational since it involved an infamous Delhi-based gangster and made known the lack of police resources.

While ferrying prisoners, inmates are often thrown together in the back of the van without any police supervision. Officials from Delhi Armed Police sit in the front and are separated by a mesh barricade. In case an untoward incident breaks out among the inmates, the police thrown in tear gas from the windows to subdue the offenders.

A second reported incident in less than six months, the ability of the Delhi police to ferry inmates is once again in the spotlight. "it is difficult to know individual cases of prisoner traveling together. Since resources are limited and there aren't enough vans, we have to ferry prisoners in numbers," a senior police official was quoted as saying.
