The police on Sunday evening arrested Girish Chandra Varma, chairman of Maharishi Vidya Mandir schools group on charges of sexually exploiting and threatening a school teacher.

Superintendent of police (Jehangirabad ) Salim Khan confirmed to dna that Varma was arrested at 4.30 pm from near the British Park at Bhojpur ashram. He will be produced in the court on Monday.

Based on the victim’s complaint of sexual assault that was lodged nine months ago, Mahila Thana police had recorded Varma’s statement on Friday. Varma had not only denied the allegations of sexual assault but even accused the victim and her husband of trying to blackmail him.

A high drama was witnessed at Mahila police station as the victim rushed there as soon as she learnt that Varma had gone there to record his statement. She staged a dharna and threatened to immolate self if police failed to act on her complaint against her tormentor .

The complainant has alleged that she was repeatedly molested by Varma for the past several years. She alleged that the accused used to insist her husband to take her along on tours to other cities and countries. Each time, adjoining rooms would be booked in a five star hotel. Varma would then send her husband away on the pretext of some errands and molest her. She said that she did not protest earlier fearing social ostracism, but when it became too much for her to take; she shared her ordeal with her husband and decided to file a complaint.
