Indo-US joint working panel on aircraft carrier meets for technology cooperation

This was the second meeting of the Joint Working Group on Aircraft Carrier Technology Co-operation (JWGACTC), constituted under thee Indo-US Defence Trade and Technology Initiative (DTTI) after the panel earlier met in August last year in the US.

The Indo-US panel on (Naval) Aircraft Carrier Technology cooperation met in India between February 15-18 to take the initiative forward, a Ministry of Defence (MoD) official said on Friday.

This was the second meeting of the Joint Working Group on Aircraft Carrier Technology Co-operation (JWGACTC), constituted under thee Indo-US Defence Trade and Technology Initiative (DTTI) after the panel earlier met in August last year in the US.

As part of the working group's engagements in India, an 11 member delegation of the US Side, headed by Rear Admiral Thomas J Moore, program executive officer, Aircraft Carriers (United States Navy), visited various defence and industrial installations here . These included the shore based test facility at Goa and Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) facility at Bengaluru.

The JWGACTC meeting happened even as India is currently constructing its first Indigenous Aircraft Carrier (IAC-I) at the Cochin Shipyard Limited where too, the delegation, said an MoD official.

The US Navy's latest aircraft carrier 100,000-tonne USS Gerald R Ford uses electromagnetic aircraft launch system (EMALS) , something Indian navy wants as it currently uses ski-jump ramps for aircraft to fly.

Under IAC-I, 40,0000 tonne aircraft carrier INS Vikrant is being constructed whereas under IAC-II, India aims to make a 65000 tonne carrier.

The concluding session of the meeting was held on Thursday at New Delhi and was co-chaired by Indian Navy vice admiral GS Pabby who is the controller of warship production and acquisition and Moore.

During this meeting, various aspects of cooperation in the field of aircraft carrier technology were discussed, said an official.
