Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti on Saturday skipped the Police Commemoration Day Parade at the last moment, citing ill health, and instead sent her close aide and Minister for Revenue, Relief, Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Abdul Rehman Veeri to attend the function as the chief guest.

Mehbooba was supposed to attend the function at Armed Police Complex at Zewan as the chief guest. The J&K information department had sent out invitations for journalists on Friday. However, on Saturday morning, Mehbooba did not turn up at the function and Veeri took the stage as the chief guest. Veeri also broke the news that Mehbooba was not well and therefore could not attend the function.

Former chief minister Omar Abdullah and Deputy Speaker of the J&K Assembly Nazir Ahmed Khan Gurezi, ministers and senior officers of police and civil administration attended the function.

Senior BJP leader and Deputy Chief Minister Dr Nirmal Singh took salute at the Commemoration Parade in Jammu. Addressing the audience, Singh said, "Terrorists groups are out to harm India's democracy, but our brave jawans sacrificed their lives while protecting the country. The state is facing Pakistan-sponsored proxy war in the form of terrorist attacks and stone-pelting," he said Crediting the Jammu and Kashmir Police for making supreme sacrifices to ensure peace in the state, Singh said, "security forces have been dealing with the situation bravely. Those involved in violence and arson will be dealt with law. Director General of Police Dr SP Vaid thanked the government for enhancing ex-gratia relief from Rs seven lakh to Rs 20 lakh, in favour of martyred police personnel.

Cops should be more humane: Minister

  • Lauding the role of the Jammu and Kashmir Police in meeting challenges in the state, Revenue and Relief Minister Abdul Rehman Veeri, while addressing the police commemoration function, asked the force to adopt a more humanitarian approach when dealing with people.
  • Calling them “one of the best” in the country, Veeri said, “You have taken on many roles successfully and people have a lot of expectations from you. You should adopt a (more) humanitarian approach when dealing with common people,” he said.
