A 44-year-old Indian-origin man in Singapore was today fined USD 1,497 and banned from driving for nine months by a local court here after he had driven his car into a police post following an altercation with a friend over financial matters.

Murali Krishnan Naidu had driven his car into a nearby police post to avoid a confrontation with his friend Haresh Govindaraju who was demanding the return of his money.

The incident took place in October last year when Naidu was heading home with his wife and a teenage son and found Haresh, 46, accompanied by two other friends waiting for him near his apartment to discuss the amount he owed him.

The trio ran towards Naidu's car after spotting him and shouted vulgar remarks at his wife while banging the vehicle. Soon Haresh leapt onto the bonnet and held onto the sides of the windscreen, refusing to get down and threatened to "break their heads", The Straits Times reported.

Fearing for the safety of his family, Naidu drove to the police post with his friend clinging to the bonnet who came off it only after several warnings from police.

Naidu pleaded guilty to committing the rash act last year and could have been jailed for up to six months, the report said.
